I've been watching the ICA documentaries and it's hugely interesting how feminist they were in ways ie with getting running water for farm women whereas when it came to things like contraception, they really stood back.
I've just enquired about joining the ICA - partly as research! It took a while to get that far in terms of phoning An Grianan, the woman over the county getting in contact and now I'm going to go to two and see if I want to join either of them.
The image is always of those who bake and craft rather than are feminist though. The recent ICA programmes where young girls were trained in various tasks was purely for entertainment though.
Yes, I'd imagine there's lots of politics in some of the guilds. I like the image of the islandman with the end attached to a piece of wood that he stood on in one of those links. It seems to be a basic warp rather than true tablet weaving, though it may have roots in tablet weaving. A back strap loom like this one http://www.eugenetextilecenter.com/home/etc/page_931_113/backstrap_loom_w_accessories.html seems to be the closest similar technique.Deirdrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01262189115116664320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406425999113108559.post-54633747886857840682015-01-31T15:22:01.021+00:002015-01-31T15:22:01.021+00:00I've heard a small amount about the shawls, bu...I've heard a small amount about the shawls, but nothing about the criosa (except that they exist) or their construction - do you know of any images? Some of the patters would be great for special events but I can't imagine my active 3 year old niece wearing it.

Honestly once you get the basics down nothing is too complicated, you just get faster doing it over time really and have to consult less reference works! Then again I have a tendency to see something I want to knit and throw myself at it and hope it all works out in the end. The photos are beautiful and many of the ideas are lovely, but they're definitely not practical everyday wear. I found the "high fashion" photos made the clothes seem even less practical for an active child.

Either way, it's a bit too advanced for me. I'm still just a step up from being a beginner knitter (or maybe I'm still a beginner really) and this wasn't quite user friendly enough for my level.Beatnik Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10452820877029354490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406425999113108559.post-11201429932876391782013-04-22T14:13:34.209+01:002013-04-22T14:13:34.209+01:00I bought this book without seeing it in the flesh,...I bought this book without seeing it in the flesh, and while they are beautiful, they are mostly impractical (handwash only delicate yarns and my daughter do not mix!) but lovely.

I tried to knit the Bertha Shoulder Wrap but was thrown by the multiple yo's then purl 15 togethers. I thought I was going to have a stroke trying to purl 15st together, but even using a crochet hook it all went a bit wrong. I intend to try again though, as the wrap is gorgeous and the Millais yarn is nice.rachaelkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08430650727983767154noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406425999113108559.post-33057991220305038402013-03-20T22:08:01.276+00:002013-03-20T22:08:01.276+00:00very cute project.I do prefer when books don't...very cute project.I do prefer when books don't have stuff modelled, or only show pieces, I'm often very suspicious that there are fit issues. Especially the little cardigan which you say was not photographed on a child. (It could be noted here that many of the clothing items are not photographed on the child in this particular book. I think that this could to keep in theme with the theme of the photography.)

Here is a link to a photograph of the set I made on a newborn:
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/knittoure/baby-boy-cardigan-set

My only correction to this pattern would be that it doesn't allow for the sleeves to be full length so I usually add a few stitches to each end of the sleeves. Other than that, it's gorgeous and everyone I've made it for has absolutely loved it.

Thanks for such a thorough review!stephhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00410951220133148661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1406425999113108559.post-52188635137271155192013-02-07T18:02:51.093+00:002013-02-07T18:02:51.093+00:00Hmm, they're cute.
