Some finished items.

So I actually finished a few items, since my post about starting the hat I have some finished items.

The Hat is done. Has been worn and is very effective against the sun (I do wear sunscreen on my face as well)  The pattern is Azealia from a recent Let's Knit magazine

One of Mac's Workmates has had a baby.  He requested something for a boy.



Rather sweet, easy enough pattern from Ravelry, Telemark Pullover top down so when it was done it was done.

Crochet, crochet and more crochet

My right hand inflamed at the base of the thumb and I couldn't knit for a while, what to do? Crochet. This weekend had some beautiful weather where drying stuff outdoors was almost compulsory. So I have some finished items.  Pattern links are to Ravelry.

 I started with a Pax by the talented Aoibhe Ni 

then I started a half-granny shawl... I got a little further than this
 but I can't find the second ball of Noro

and the other ball of Noro can't be found (my house seems to eat noro!) there may have been some swearwords

I stopped two sets of scallops before the pattern was supposed to end, I was running out of yarn and while I possibly could have finished up another round but the pattern ended that side.  This was the sky yesterday evening and I love the blue against the blue.  The clothes pegs we picked up in London at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Knitting Shawl FInish

I have another post with some crocheted finished items, but this is a knitting project, I'm back knitting!! With one skien of the Ruca multy, made from sugar cane, which feels so soft I reckoned it needed to be a shawl or scarf or something but it's only 240m, I found the pattern Triangle Scarf Bonus Pattern and got stuck in, today has had a chunk of knitting because I've been suffering from some minor food poisoning and it's been a nice distraction. I finished what the pattern suggested but I had plenty left so I did another set of the diamonds and again another set of squares. Now there's 4g left of the yarn which I think is close enough! In reality it's a bit more ice-cream coloured, but the sun is washing things out.

Ruby Star Hat

 I'm slightly off my feet at the moment (I had x-rays today, the doctor thinks I may have broken something, now to wait for the results).  I decided that I would allow myself to start something once I had worked a bit on other projects.  The Three Tams Pattern had been on my queue for years and I think this variation was always going to be the one I was going to do.  I pulled some of my stash Aran Yarns and found a cream ball of Noro Cash Iroha  and a reddish ball of Noro Kureyon, and started working, two days ago...

 Yeah, it's kinda addictive knitting, and I knit it two-handed, where you hold the yarn in each hand and throw with one hand and pick with the other.  I made myself learn this technique when I was doing one of the Art of Knitting Throws.  It's slow at first but you get used to it and it makes tensioning colour knitting a little easier for me.

I'd knit it again...

I made myself some promises this year, to knit things that suited me and to try to ensure that I examined things while I knit them to ensure that they're actually good for me.  And then I spent the last two months doing a fair amount of knitting, so this is going to be a long post.

 So far this year I've knit over 4km of yarn! I feel pretty chuffed with myself. I'm almost finished my Vog On socks, I got a chunk of them done during PCon last weekend and I'm happy with them.  The Nevada City Windows cardigan is almost there too. After that I'm going to go back to the Garter Stitch Cardigan and fix those damned sleeves

Socks and tanktop

So I've been quite productive this few days


Thanks socks for Mac with some extra repeats of the straight patterning in order to make it long enough.

The socks produced a grin and the top is timely, as soon as it dries anyway!  The infilling was necessary because the armholes needed to be deepened, now they're right but then they were too small, I would never have been able to wear it.

I've been a bad blogger and forgot to update my finished objects so I'm going to do a cluster of them spaced over a few days. Hopefully I won't leave so long between updates next time. The Last Item I finished was the Canal de Midi Socks.

I also abandoned a pair of Widdershins I had them almost finished when I realised that they were too tight and weren't going to work, so another knitter took them off my hands and plans to finish them. They were going to be my pair of knee socks for this year but every inch I knit it seemed to get shorter.

New Socks - Canal du Midi

My latest pair of socks

They're Canal du Midi socks from Knitting on the Road (Amazon US) Amazon UK Book Depository

They're knit in Zitron Trekking that I got in Woll-Boutique Elflein

when we were in Frankfurt last year. I knit the flap with a slip 1 knit 1 rather than the plain knitted flap the pattern called for, if I was knitting it again I'd change the U shaped heel cup to a more V-shaped one.

Not-too Brainless

I started knitting this thinking it was going to be a pair of socks for me. As I was knitting them the chevrons and the fairly camouflaged colouring suggested that Mac was a better recipient. They're called Brainless yeah, right, mostly okay, but there are aspects that really require a lot of thinking. It also was supposed to stop where the front needle is but he requested more length, and then more, and more, until I could have done twice the number of cables but as I already had finished one sock and he didn't seem to want much more and by the time I realised how much more he wanted I was already done with this pattern.

The yarn is GB Inka 100 which was a bit fuzzier than I expected.

I feel I had a rather productive week sick.

Mental Health Knitting

I've been working on some complicated pieces recently and decided I needed something easy, simple, quick. I'm off sick at the moment and my current projects are going very sloooooooly. Also when I'm ill I tend to be a little scattered, antibiotics do not help me to be completely compos mentis. (thank you Firefox for the spellcheck that's saving my blushes)

I decided first that I'd try to knit a waistcoat or tank top, in the US both seem to be termed vests, a term that doesn't distinguish enough about the two types of garment. Entertainingly Vest is an older term while waistcoat is newer. Another example of UK/Irish English and American English being divided by more than an ocean. It even goes deeper, as tanks in the US can be tops on their own, while in my mind a tank top is a closed waistcoat, often with a deep U or V neck. A vest to me is a garment you wear under a blouse, shirt or t-shirt as a warming layer.

I found a yarn I wanted to knit in and a pattern I liked and cast on, an realised that the yarn and the pattern were maybe a missmatch.

The yarn is proving to be a bit splitty and not helping my antibiotics addled brain. So I'm not sure if I should stop and try again when I come off or abandon this pattern with this yarn. I'm not sure it's crisp enough for the pattern.

So I decided that it would be a good thing to do some simple projects, to somewhat cleanse the palette and to make me feel a bit productive.

Another Pair of socks

My eleventh pair of socks this year! I am on track to knit 12 this year, particularly as I've cast on for the twelfth already and am into the first repeat of the ankle.

These are my George R R Martin socks



Why George R R Martin? The first sock was completed while listening to George R R Martin's Guest of Honour Speech at Octocon this year. Yes I'm a geek.

I love how Autumnal this colourway is, I think it may have originally been bought to make a pair of socks for my husband but they're mine now. They're quite apt for wearing today, which I am doing.

ETA: These are Hermoine's Everyday Socks which definitely lok more complicated than they are, a nice pattern that breaks up possible pooling on the yarn.

Slightly Pink Socks

So these are technically September socks because I finished them last week.

I knit the first two repeats on 2.75mm and the remaining sock on 2.5 and I could possibly have gone with 2.5 and 2.25 to be honest but the yarn has a lot of cotton in it and I predict that there will be some shrinkage over time. I still like them a lot.

And no, the colour and the style has nothing to do with the fact that October is Breast Cancer Month. Please support your local cancer support services, please know what's normal for you and realise that if you feel like you're wasting your doctor's time maybe you need to change your doctor, and also remember, women don't only get Breast Cancer, I didn't.

New waistcoat

So I finally sewed on the buttons, I finished that on the 1st of this month and have been looking at it for a while thinking about sewing them on, finally today I did it.



the pattern is Hawaii from Manos del Uruguay in the colourway Pisces in their Silk Blend this is the third pattern I've knit in it.

I have to say it was a bit of a trial occasionally and is a prime example of having to read the pattern several times before launching yourself at it. Buttonholes are necessaryand you need to be thinking of them almost from the off. I used Weezalana's notes a lot while knitting and did knit the sleeves in the round as well. Once you get into the swing of the pattern it is relatively easy.

This is for my cousin's baby who was born this week. It's knit in James C Bret's Pure Merino, a machine washable yarn, the buttons are from my stash.

Finished

I've finished the Ribwarmer from Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Workshop. It was an interesting project and it does meet at the back, When knitting it I knit one row before changing colours on the opposite side which meant that it lined up properly, otherwise I would have had the reverse of the fabric to the front for the second half. I think it would look even better in a heavily variegated yarn with a plain dark yarn. Still this was in some leftovers I had around, I'm sure Elizabeth would be proud! It now needs some washing.

Newly finished socks, only took me a day over 2 weeks (started them the day of the last Fiber Fun Friday - i.e. two weeks ago- and finished them today). I did a good chunk of the work on them during both Fiber Fun Fridays that I attended. I did another chunk of them while role-playing this evening, though there was a fair amount of distraction during combat and some ripping happened.

Taken from Interweave Knits Spring 2010, the Darkest yarn is from Jenners in Edinburgh, the two pink blocks were from a sale in This is Knit and the rest from The Yarn Room.

Base Blocks took all bar 2g of the 1st hank of yarn
Body Blocks took almost a full hank of yarn each (all bar 3.5g each approx.)

I filled in the back using the oats colourway up to the reverse stocking stitch portion on the shoulders k2tog or p2 depending on the patterning each end of the row. I tried a variant that was in an email from Interweave knits but it was too big. I did a rib edging along the neck that was 6 rows long with a mitered centre. I also used the oats colourway for the sleeve and bottom edging. If I was doing it again I would crochet along the edges instead of picking up and knitting one row before casting off.

I like how my variant shows the construction. I wore it to last weeks Fiber Fun Friday(1) and the wonderful Elven too a photo of me. Man my hair is a mess.

Newish Finished Object

I finally got around to actually taking the photograph off my camera and now I'm posting about it!

So the lovely Debbie (my other sister-in-law) gave me a voucher for my birthday and I decided to knit Siesta Source(1) by Cork Based Carol Feller but I felt I needed to make some changes (apart from the incidental turning the pattern updside down and getting the decreases along the body the wrong way around, but consistently the wrong way around!)



I lengthened the body overall splitting it after the last set of increases and also added some extra to the sleeves with the cable along the edge of the sleeves and the edge of the split. I started when I was doing the last set of increases by doing two rows of p1 either side of the side markers and then p2, then k1p2, k2p2, k3p2, k4p2 and then splitting into two and doing the same cable as in the neck. When I got to a length I was happy with I then cast off using a loose cast off. The sleeves I knit 7 rows (could have possibly knit 9-10 actually as I was left with 6g of yarn at the end and there was about 1g per round) and then cast on 6 stitches and repeated the cable edging, p2 tog at the end of every second row and then sl1 k1 p4 every return row. I'm very happy with it.

(1) I had some problems printing on A4 with it, I ended up having to print in landscape to get all the details, I think the website is formatted for US Letter.
